I have been wanting to try making apple butter for awhile and yesterday was finally the day!  Here in Southern California, it is not an item you hear much about, and in fact, I had never tasted it before.  It was a fun process and left my house smelling good all day.

You will need:

* 6 pounds of apples, peeled, cored and chopped
* 2 Tablespoons of Vanilla
* 1 Cup of Sugar
* 1 Cup of Brown Sugar
* 2 Tablespoons of Cinnamon
* 1/2 tsp Ground Cloves

The hardest part is prepping the apples.  A few months ago Amazon had an apple peeler/corer on sale so I bought it.  I searched and right now you can purchase the  Maxam Apple Peeler Corer Slicer with Suction Base for $13.42.  It made the process go so much quicker!

My husband coring and peeling the apples for me!  Then I cut them up.

Here is what 6 cups of apples looks like once it is in your slow cooker - just about filled it up!  Now add 2 Tablespoons of Vanilla and let it cook for 6-8 hours, until they are pretty much mush.  Took my cooker about 7 hours.  I also stirred it about once an hour.

Here is what mine looked like after 7 hours.  Then add all the rest of the ingredients listed above and cook for another 6-7 hours.  By now your home will smell wonderful!  In the end you will get the product I have pictured at the top of the page.  I have a lot of random jars in my kitchen, I love to buy them at the thrift store.  I will definitely be making this again and giving they away as gifts.  Money Saving Mom created some really great labels if you want to print some out.  Click HERE to check them out.  I love them!
