Isaiah's Legacy

Image result for isaiah's legacy
Until recently I had never read a book where historical events were interwoven with fiction. Isaiah's Legacy is such a book. Mesu Andrews takes us back to biblical times and the story of a 12 year old, Manasseh, who becomes king of Judah. We are taken on a journey to learn how we was raised/tricked into believe in other Gods and how God how to do something as drastic as put him in prison for him to once believe in the one true God.

I enjoyed the story, even though I knew the ending. We are int...

I've Seen the End of You {Review}

I had the opportunity to get a sneak peek of this book, which releases on January 7, 2020. I had never heard of the author before, so enjoyed learning more about him as a doctor and an author. In the book Dr. Warren shares stories of patients he assisted throughout the years and the faith struggle he has had from time to time. Although I found learning more about neurosurgery in particular fascinating, over all the book was pretty depressing. Most of the stories he shares are of patients who ...

The Faith of Queen Elizabeth {Review}

Image of The Faith of Queen Elizabeth: The Poise, Grace and Quiet Strength Behind the Crown
Being from America, I really do not know much about Queen Elizabeth, or the Royal Family as a whole. So, I was happy to get a chance to read this book by Dudley Delffs. I so enjoyed learning more about her becoming Queen and the over 50 years that she has reigned. I feel like I know her so much better than before and find her fascinating. The author a few times mentioned the Netflix series The Crown, so of course I had to start watching it as a result of having a desire to learn more. I loved...

I truly cannot remember the last time I have read a book with a set of short stories, I like short stories since they keep my attention, but I was unsure about Scouting the Reaper. Not a huge fan of the name of the book and I could not make sense of the cover art. Well, once you read the stories, the art makes sense. The book consists of eight short stories. I enjoyed most of them (really enjoyed the one about the truck driver and his load of penguins), a few left me just were not my cup of t...

Jesus in Me: Experiencing the Holy Spirit as a Constant Companion
For as many books as Anne Graham Lotz has written, this is the first one that I have read. I loved the topic of the book "Experiencing the Holy Spirit as a Constant Companion" . Anne shared her knowledge of the Holy Spirit and shared very personal stories that showed Him at work in her life and how she experienced and continues to experience Him.

I found the book inspirational, one of those books that you hold on to to refer back to or let a friend borrow from time to time. I love having thos...

Dreams That Never Were {Review}

Posted by Moms Fun Money on Thursday, October 3, 2019, In : Reviews
Return to product information

Let me start by saying that when an author can write a book and you do not know when truth ends and fiction begins, that is one good author! When I started Dreams That Never Were, I did not read the blurb on the book. From the title and picture on the cover, I incorrectly assumed this was a book of non fiction. As I started, and started to get enthralled with the main character, Alex Hurley, I started to wonder how the author, Greg Messel, got such personal information. I then took a moment t...

Micah Berteau has a gem of a book on his hands! He takes the bible story of Hosea and Gomer, husband and wife, and reminds us that the story is really about Jesus and us. He reminds us of just how much we are loved in a refreshing new way.

I dog eared pages with quotes like, "Shame, guilt and condemnation are not of God. God does not give you any of those feelings. This is why we have to be so careful not to confuse condemnation and conviction. Once brings guild and share, while the other bri...

Something Needs to Change: A Call to Make Your Life Count in a World of Urgent Need
Have you ever read a book that changes you? That is how I feel about Something Needs to Change by David Platt. The true story allows us to go along with David while he travels the Himalayan mountains. To hear first hand what he came across and how he was moved to action both lead me to tears and to frustration. She shares his own emotional struggles of faith and the questions you had. But in the end, he too was changed. To the point where he took a new job once he was back home.

I have to admit that when I received Farewell My Life I was a little worried. This is one big book! But as I started I realized that this would be a quick read because the author, Cynthia Sally Haggard, does a great job of bringing the characters to life. The story is based around the main character, Grace. When we first meet her she is 17 and to save she is niave would be an understatement. In fact at times I found myself getting frustrated at how little she knew, like she was a real person!...

Delivered

Beth Moore is so popular and thinking back, this might be the first of her books I have ever read! Upon receiving Delivered I read that it was taken from another book she wrote, Get Out of that Pit. I am not sure which book is larger. Delivered is a quick read and has a lot of great takeaways. I did not find most of what she shared anything that I currently needed help with, but I know plenty of people that would find this book a great resource!

I had the privilege of reading Ever Faithful, a Vintage National Park Novel by Karen Barnett. This is the third in the series and I cannot wait to read the older two! The story, while fiction, allows you to step back into time to Yellowstone National Park in the 1930s. The story has both romance and mystery. Will they fall in love? Who is setting the fires?Karen Barnett is a wonderful author. I love when I pick up a book and do not want to put it down because I am bought in right away.

Finish First

I grew up in the 1980's and remember Scott Hamilton well. I was excited to read his newest book, Finish First. I did not realize that this was more of a self help/inspirational book rather than an autobiography (which I love)!. Although Scott does weave in his own personal story in the book, his goal with this book is to inspire readers to push themselves more. While I grabbed a few nuggets of wisdom from this book, overall I felt it gave a lot of info and not a lot of practical steps. He eve...

Midnight at the Tuscany Hotel {Review}

Midnight at the Tuscany Hotel

This is the second book by James Markert that I have read and he did not disappoint! Midnight at the Tuscany Hotel is the story of a family (husband, wife and son) who create and live in a hotel in a fictional town in California in the early 1900's. We are then shot forward to the 1940's, after the death of the month, the son coming back from WWII and the father suffering from memory loss. The story takes us on a journey, both present and past to learn more about this family and the hotel. So...

I loved how personally we got to know the 3 main characters and their "baggage". Obviously the book is meant to be used for self reflection and I love how effortlessly the author did that. I would recommend this book to everyone!

I have to admit that I had never heard of the Manns before, but like to read books on marriage. The title alone caught my interest and made me want to read the book. What I did not know is that the book is mainly about the journey of the author, as a father of an autistic boy. He shared his story in a very raw way. Even if you do not have an autistic person in your life, there were enough nuggets of wisdom to apply to your own life. Leaving Cloud 9 is the story of a man who lived in horrible conditions as a child. We learn what it was like and then take a journey with him as he becomes an adult. Courage, Dear Heart (ebook)

The premise of Courage, Dear Heart Letters to a weary world, is a great one. I have to admit that I do not know a whole lot about Dolly Parton. I am not a country music fan but remember her popularity in the 1980's when I was growing up. I thought it would be fun to read a book that would touch more on the spiritual side.

I was intrigued to start reading When Through Deep Waters. The plot looked like a good one, a five year old dies in a pool drowning and we journey with the mother afterwards. I knew it was a Christian book and was curious to see where the author went with it.

I have to say, that unfortunately for me, I did not enjoy the book. It was a little abstract for me. Even after reading it I am not sure if my understanding of the children characters in the book is what the author intended. I will admit...

Apparently Robert Whitlow is a pretty famous author, where have I been? I looked forward to reading A Time to Stand, as the topic is very current. A white police officer is accused of shooting a black teenager and is going to be put on trial for the shooting. In comes a local lawyer who hires a young, black women lawyer to help him with the case. Do I have your interest yet?

Don't Settle for Safe {Review}

Posted by Moms Fun Money on Wednesday, August 30, 2017, In : Reviews

While I enjoyed the book, when I was done I realized that the author told a lot of stories about herself and then walked the reader through how to handle these situations or ones similar. For me, most of the stories were not something pertinent to me, so I finished the book not feeling like I gained a lot personally, kind of seemed like another self help book.

I am sure there are many readers who could relate to her stories and would get more out of it.

I was given a copy of this book to revie...

This is one of the best books I have read in a while, a must read! This is Rob Schmitz's first book and he did such a good job. The book centers around people who live or work on the Street of Eternal Happiness in Shanghai. He does an amazing job of letting us into their lives, current and past and paints such an amazing picture of them and the street itself.

I could not wait to pick it up each day after work and find out more about these interesting people. I would love for it to be made into...

I normally do not read a lot of suspense (thriller) books, but thought I would change things up and choose to review Here and Gone by Haylen Beck. This is the first book I can remember actually be anxious reading! Early on in the book I actually thought about putting it down, afraid of what might come next. I would say that is the sign of a good thriller book!

The story revolves around an abused wife who is escaping her husband with her two children. They get pulled over in the middle of nowh...

I love when I get so enthralled with a book that I do not want to put it down and such was the case with An Outlaw and a Lady: A memoir of music, life with Waylon. Jessi Colter is the wife of Waylon Jennings. I am not a country music fan, but I am a biography fan, and this autobiography is amazing! I loved learning about Jessi, her early years traveling with her mother, her first marriage and then meeting Waylon and the years and trials they had. I enjoyed her sharing lyrics to some of her so...

I was in a history mood when I selected The Naturalist as the next book to read. I knew a little about Theodore Roosevelt, knew he helped start national parks, but this book really digs in his favorite past time, hunting, killing and preserving animals and it started at a young age. I loved learning more about this side of him and his many expeditions, including his well know trip to Africa after his presidency was over.

If you enjoy history, I would recommend this book.

I have been following Dr. Flanagan's blog for about a year and was pleased to hear that he had written a book and made sure I had time to read it. I loved the concepts in the book - taking the time to really understand yourself, your own worth and I loved the notes to his children that he put in the book. Overall there are some great ideas, but implementing them in your life, I felt, lacked. Now that I know this information, what do I do with it. How do I walk forward with this knowledge. I a...

Disaster Falls: A Family Story

I enjoy true stories, but this was the first time I was venturing into a true story about the death of a child, written by a father. Very heartbreaking story, but many lessons learned from reading the book.

As a reader, I did find it hard to not get a little frustrated at the order in which the book was written. I am one that likes the facts up front and then the details. Mr. Gerson did not give us the details of the accident until after half way through the book, which actually made me put t...

I have loved Carol Burnett for years! I have fond memories of watching re-runs of her show growing up with my grandma. Years ago she wrote a book called Laughing Till It Hurts about her life and I loved it. So, when I heard she had written a new book, In Such Good Company, I knew I had to read it!

The book covers her years putting on The Carol Burnett Show. We get lots of behind the scenes information on the people who helped make the show what it was, the guest stars she had on the show and ...

A Spectacle of Glory Review

Posted by Moms Fun Money on Saturday, January 7, 2017, In : Reviews

With the new year, I know many of us are looking for ways to start new, good habits. I was asked to review A Spectacle of Glory. It is a small book with a dated devotional for each day. I have completed one week and find the writing to be very thoughtful and well written. Being a tiny book does put some limits in place and one is that there is space to write the verse(s) they are speaking of, but not room enough to actually quote them. It would be nice to have it all in one place, but without...

Still have some Olympic fever going on around our house so I was happy to be able to read Greater Than Gold by David Boudia, Olympic Gold Medalist.

He candidly shares how his focus in the beginning was on winning and being known by others, but once he accepted Jesus his focus was on Him and how he could use his tale...

The minute I saw this book, Life of the Party, by Bob Kealing, I knew I had to read it! I am a fan of the 1950"s and have been to my fair share of Tupperware parties, and could not wait to learn more about Brownie Wise. She was President of Tupperware during part of the 1950's and really was a big reason for their success in the early years.

I loved all the pictures scattered throughout the book and just learning more about how Tupperware began. I will be honest and say that at times it lost ...

Hi everyone, back with another book review! I like to mix up my fiction and non-fiction ready as much as possible and decided to choose Catherine West's The Things We Knew.

The story centers around a family from Nantucket, and most specifically around the youngest sister, Lynette. Family history she cannot remember, an old love that is back in the picture and ailing parents, makes this a great summer read! It has everything you would want, but with a spiritual bend that makes it refreshing.

I had the chance to review what I believed to be a Young Adult book, That's Not Hay in My Hair. Come to find out, it really is a book more for the middle school aged crowd. It is a cute story, written by Juliette Turner, who herself is only 17, and is the story of a 5th grade girl who moves from New York City to Texas. With that moves comes all the trails of learning to live on a farm, in the middle of no where. For the author being so young, it is pretty well written, but did find some ideas...

I have recently been reading and reviewing books that I would consider "self help or educational" books and decided it was time to read a book just for fun!  I was blessed enough to receive a copy of Wildflowers from Winter by Katie Ganshert to review.   It is a Christian novel, and I have to admit, I was not sure what to expect.  Would it be too corny or predictable?  I have to say, I really enjoyed the book.  It left me wanting more, and guess what?  There is more.  The sequel, Wishing on ...

Emmy Rossum Sentimental Journey Review

Posted by Moms Fun Money on Sunday, January 20, 2013, In : Reviews

I had the privilege of previewing a great new album, Sentimental Journey by Emmy Rossum.  If she looks familiar, she currently stars in Shameless on Showtime.

My daughter just loves older music, and Emmy decided to create an entire album of beautiful classic songs.  Each song represents a month of the year, what a creative idea.  I loved her take on I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover and All I Do Is Dream of You.

Sentimental Journey releases on January 29th, but you can pre-order it on Ama...

I recently finished the book The Respect Dare by Nina Roesner.  I was really looking forward to reading this book as mu husband and I had gone through a similar book Love & Respect by Dr. Emerson Eggeriches a few years ago with a group from church.  I was interested to see how a woman author would seeing respecting your husband.

The book is set up to complete one dare each day for forty days.  Each day is only about 2-4 pages, so you can definitely find time each day to read it.  Most of the d...

Real Life Real Miracles Book Review

Posted by Moms Fun Money on Wednesday, December 5, 2012, In : Reviews

I had the privilege of receiving a free copy of Real Life Real Miracles by James L. Garlow & Keith Wall from Bethany House to review.  It is a book filled with over thirty short stories about every day people and the amazing miracles that happened to them.

It starts with the story of a passenger on United Flight 811 in 1989.  If you remember, it took off from Honolulu and had a large section of the plane rip off.  Her story is amazing, but so many other stories in the book touched me in many...

I shared with you a few weeks ago in our weekly video on Youtube, that I was lucky enough to be chosen by Influenster.com to receive a package with Palmolive's new Fresh Infusions dishwashing detergent and coupons to share.  Well, I have been able to use all three of the scents this new product comes in and I am in love!  I have a dishwasher, but still seem to do a lot of dishes by hand (mainly pots and pans).  It is definitely not one of my favorite chores, but this new product smells so goo...

I was lucky enough to receive a preview copy of Kylie Minogue's latest album, The Abbey Road Session, that just came out today!  Her voice is just so beautiful and I found myself relaxing just listening to it.  It is definitely one of those albums to have on a road trip.

I recently had the pleasure of listening to an album by a new artist, Kyle Sherman.  His debut album, Hear Me, is a contemporary Christian album that is very eclectic.  Some songs have more of a gospel feel while others are more contemporary.  My absolute favorite is One True Friend which includes vocals of a child and is so touching.

So, if you love to listen to new artist, I would definitely recommend this album.  It is uplifting and just makes you feel good!  Click HERE if you are interes...

When To Speak Up & When to Shut Up

Posted by Moms Fun Money on Saturday, October 6, 2012, In : Reviews

I had the opportunity to read a book that has been in print for awhile, one that has sold over 200,000 copies.  When to Speak Up & When to Shut Up by Dr. Michael D. Sedler.

There are 10 chapters filled with wonderful advice, stories from the author's life and biblical examples to help us understand how to communicate, or in some cases not communicate, with others. It is a book to really ponder over, and if you have a conflict right now with another person, it will probably help shed light on...

I just finished a really good book and wanted to let you know about it.  If you enjoy reading John Grisham then you will like The Deposit Slip by Todd Johnson.  I loved the idea for the book.  I am always in awe of writers and how they come up with new, fresh ideas for plots for books.  This was a really good one!  Here is a little blurb about the book:

When Jared Neaton grew tired of the shady ethics of his big law firm and left to go out on his own, he never expected the wheels to fly off so...

Unjunk Your Junk Food: Healthy Alternatives to Conventional Snacks
I have the pleasure to be a part of the 2012 Naturally Savvy blogger program.  Our first assignment was to review their newest book Unjunk Your Junk Food.  I am the first one to admit I do not eat well.  I love junk food and eat way too much of it.  What I love about this book is that the first three chapters go in depth about all the additives in our food and breaks down why they are not good for you.  They have a list of "The Scary Seven" ingredients that you should try to make sure your fo...

Rascal Flatts Review & Contest

Posted by Moms Fun Money on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, In : Reviews

Rascal Flatts' latest album Changed came out last week.  I was asked to review the album, but I will be the first to admit that I am not a country music fan.  Growing up in Southern California it is not the music of choice, not that there are not a lot of people that listen to it.  So, I sat down yesterday once the CD arrived and promised to be objective.  The first track is Changed and I was pleasantly surprised.  The words that were sung, about stepping away from faith and them coming back,...
