I have a passion for true stories. Can't turn one down in book or movie form. I was asked to review The Queen of Katwe and to let you know about the upcoming Disney movie based on this book - coming out September 23rd!
I will be honest and say that the beginning of the book was a little confusing. After a short introduction to Phiona Mutesi, you are introduced to people that you are not sure of how they fit in the story and why you are learning about them. Once the book introduces us to Robert Katende the true story unfolds and then you learn about his heart for slum children and how he met Phiona. The author, Tom Crothers, is so good at really putting in in the slums. Allowing you to get a true picture of what it is like to live in Katwe, Uganda. The joy of young Phiona as she gets on a plane for the first time, sees a working toilet for the first time. Things that we just take for granted. What I love about this book is that the story is not over yet!

Phiona is still playing chess and there are still opportunities for her to get better and to perhaps some day reach her goal of becoming a Grand Master. I cannot wait to see the movie and continue to learn about what is next for her.
