Unjunk Your Junk Food Review

I have the pleasure to be a part of the 2012 Naturally Savvy blogger program. Our first assignment was to review their newest book Unjunk Your Junk Food. I am the first one to admit I do not eat well. I love junk food and eat way too much of it. What I love about this book is that the first three chapters go in depth about all the additives in our food and breaks down why they are not good for you. They have a list of "The Scary Seven" ingredients that you should try to make sure your foods do not have. They are:
1) High-Fructose Corn Syrup
2) Trans-Fats
3) MSG
4) Artificial Flavors
5) Artificial Colors
6) Artificial Sweeteners
7) Preservatives
They also challenged us to look in our cupboard to see if some items would surprise us now that we knew what to avoid. I decided to go to my fridge. One of the items that I am proud of when I buy at the store because it is low in calories, and I thought good for me, is Yoplait Light yogurt. To my surprise the third ingredient listed was High-Fructose Corn Syrup!
Once chapter 4 of this book begins they break down each snack category and show you a bad choice and a good choice. Many of the items listed are organic and items I have never seen. I would assume they could be found at Whole Foods or Trader Joes. In some cases the better choice does not have fewer calories but has lower sodium or is without any of the Scary Seven ingredients. It definitely taught me a new way to look at foods. It even sparked my husband and I both to go on a diet. We went out this morning for our first walk! I am sure it will be entertaining next time I visit the grocery store and take the time to look at the ingredients a little more closely. My shopping trips may never be the same :)
